Older listeners to show may remember Damon's exhilarating and rythmically challenging remixes which we loved and featured on the show over the years.

The DIY Chart Show is still in hibernation, despite some fairly promising noises from various quarters. Hopefully more news on this in the nearest future.

Hey, What happened to the DIY Chart Show?

Thank you very much to all of you who have been enquiring about the whereabouts of the DIY Chart Show. We really do appreciate the concern and the interest.

We are in hibernation at the moment. After the collapse of the Radio Station where we first started we have had three different offers of work - one, unbelievably from Singapore.

We are currently in the throws of putting together a radio station in collaboration with some friends and hope to Launch at some point over the summer. As soon as we have more information on this we will be straight back on here with more information.

Again, a big thank you to everyone who has written to us regarding the whereabouts of the show.

DIY Chart Show - A New Dawn

So, it turns out the tumour at Brno's Radio Student was malignant. The locks have been changed, the computer systems have been changed. The DJ's and presenters have been sacked by SMS! In one case - Vana - The Radio Station's popular breakfast show DJ turned up last monday to find that someone else was sitting in his seat doing his show.

Sometime during last year 50% of the shares in the radio were sold to Radio Krokodyl, one of Brno's biggest commercial radio stations. They have decided to cold reboot Radio Student.

The upshot of this is that The DIY Chart Show along with it's sister shows, Feed Your Head, The Kitchen Sink and Sacre Bleu have been axed.

Feel like crying? - Don't! These shows and more will live and breath again. A New Dawn in broadcasting - or something like that. Click the feed link in the right hand column in order to get updates on this. We plan to be broadcasting again on the 18th of February 2007.

Got rather self-indulgent today, but hey, that's the beauty of having your own show. We played some Cat Stevens, Pentangle, Steve Hillage, even some Banarama. Yet still room for the new stuff from the likes of Amon Tobin and Player One.

A three-way bizarre Me trangle this week, as MeTom, MeRobin and MePaul bounced about the starship throwing tunes at each other like some kind of weird custard pie fight. Ghosts, I Like Trains, Nicole Willis, Dirty Disco Youth - everything and everyone somehow crammed into a two hour big long kind of tasty filled baguette shaped radio programme.

Flabby Spaceship

Once a joke holiday destination for mothers-in-law, now a 19 year-old boy from New York making cracking tunes based on the instrumentation of Eastern Europe's minorities. That's the kind of global change you only get on the DIY Chart Show. What once was a sprawling metropolis in the grib of sectarian violence is now a happy-go-lucky singing chap from New York who goes by the name of Beirut (pictured above).

This was guest presenter MeTom's tip for 2007 - while Navigator MeRobin was singing the virtues of malcolm middleton and the tussle.

This week's show also featured a wee retrospective autopsy on what went right musically for who last last year. 2006 was for most of us dominated by the resurgence of Baile Funk, the high quality soulful electro warblings of the the Junior Boys and The Knife and swathes upon swathes of 17year old indie bands like the Artic Monkeys (TM) - but different.

Happy New Year? Uncertain New Year more like!

At the moment we are unsure about Radio Student's plans for the DIY Chart Show, a change of management has made our continuation on this frequency less likely, although they have told us that we will continue at least til the end of January.

Anyway we're back after our christmas holidays, and after a rather spectacular Hogmanay party at Brno's fantastic Fleda (hopefully we'll have some pictures to show you soon - lol!).

So the first show will be on the 8th of January at 12 noon CET and we're excited about the new show, because amongst other things there is a real swathe, a veritable cornucopia, an authentic smorgasbord of new releases this month - leading many experts* to suggest that January 2007 will see more quality releases than all of 2006!!!

Anyway hope to see yous all v. soon - well next Sunday in fact.

*I made this fact up.

Hmm. Not a good one today, if we're honest. Started badly with MePaul deleting half the tracks on the playlist 30 minutes before the show started, and kind of degenerated from there.

When they're not popping off into space to bring us back pressies from the moon, or being the World Champions at baseball, or um, making more american stuff, they have time to sit on their porches and invent bluegrass. How marvellous. So today, we played some on the show (except some of it was Canardian, and a bit more of it was from Scotchland, but hell boy, them thar 'mericans did it first). We also had mashup from Aggro1 (USA), Duke of Uke (USA), Sonya Cotton (USA) - and a whole load of other stuff from some other countries too. An odd show this week, MePaul was abducted by aliens (or something) leaving
MEROBIN bravely to battle behind the controls. Somehow despite the absence of MePaul somewhat normal service was delivered. Even if MeRobin took the opportunity of MePaul's absence to play a ridiculously self indulgent set ranging from Part Chimp's Hello Bastards to Kate Bush's Wuthering Heights and from Goose's Black Gloves to Dolly Parton's Jolene.

Yes you read right, a truly mixed bag of contingency measures....

MeRobin would however like to advantage of this opportunity to showcase two brand new acts which have come across the DIY Chart Show Radar.

Firstly Earworm, now I am a little partial to a wee bit of industrial metal now and again. thrashing about the bedroom saying the F word and bouncing off the walls:

Earworm a DUO (a rare duo in a world of leatherclad foursomes) from Southampton cover all the bases with what at first seems like a fair rendition of the genre. - but it borrows so much from techno production sensibilities that it cannot fail to find a wider audience. chopped samples poke their heads out of the metallic surface from time to time reminding you that it's more that just metal. oh and it rocks.

Canadians are people too, which means they have ears which can listen. Some, if not many of them have been known to listen to our show, which means we must be nice to them. Fair's fair.

Doesnt seem much point in saying much today, as if youre a net listener you couldnt listen to the show. Although i put on a good mood for those who could listen, im actually pretty pissed off.

Weird thing is, Slow Joe suggested on the forum that maybe the show had been sabotaged. I told him not to be paranoid. Yet its interesting that with 15 minutes of the show finishing, the streams were back up and working fine.

This is the biggest dilema facing radio DJ's today and one that noone's satisfactorily put to bed yet.

even the mighty D!Y Chart Show came to crushing halt over the ins and outs of this problem.

Doubtless, this will be a debate that rages on for years, quite probably without ever being resolved.

Yep - MotoGP paid it's annual trip to Brno this weekend, which meant the Starship DIY had swarms of men dressed as PowerRangers buzzing about its brow...but as you know by now, it takes a lot more than that to put us off our stride.

We went everywhere from shouty hip hop to happy clappy pop, rocky guitars to mellowy dreamy, all topped off with a nice dollop of electro beaty nonsense. Much better than a wasp in your helmet.

This week MeRobin returned, like some kind of superhero in blue tights and red pants, and all was suddenly well again. It was hot, too hot to think, but the moosic done the stuff for us - great stuff from Poni Hoax, Zooey, and all the others - but its so hot my memory has melted, so if you wanna know what else we played, go here

One thing was unforgettable thought - this weeks, featured artist, Dva. Possibly the best feature we've ever had, we're hoping they go on to great things. What limited info exists about the band can be found in our features section , but I reckon we're gonna have to catch up with them sometime for some kind of interview. Watch this space.

Half the fat, twice the goodness!

Sadly, today as the pod bay doors slammed shut behind me, I forgot about poor MeRobin standing behind me. No matter how much he banged on the windows, there was sadly no way of rescuing him whilst also attending to the show - and let's face it, the show must always come first.

So, with free reign over the machines, I managed to fit in a few tunes which would never have been allowed under the old regime - my favourite of which was Chas 'n' Dave's "Aint No Pleasing You", which I thought would be enough to lose me my pilot's licence, but in fact received a very warm welcome from the forumites and the locals here in Brno. Who'd have thunk it?

So me and Nobo are now off to attempt a daring rescue of what's left of MeRobin - maybe we'll have him back in working order for next week's show...or maybe not. Find out next sunday.

THE ESCAPE POD

Yeah, today's show was a bit of a toughie, MeRobin was recovering from a send-off/birthday bash, while Mepaul had woken in the wee small hours to travel from Kutna Hora to be in Brno to pilot the ship. For those of you who dont know your Czech geography, Kutna Hora is what's known in the biz as "'kin miles away"...however my trip did provide me with the chance to observe two fantastice pieces of grafitti - the one above, and another which countered that emotion:

Today is Macca's birthday and as if by magic me and paul both turned up at the DIY CHart How today with Paul McCartney Songs to play. Mepaul had selected Paperback writer as a greatest track of all time, a selection that MeLoveYouLongthyme's scientific tests verified as a great.

And Merobin turned up with the 1980 McCartney single, Temporary Secretary which is remarkable for being the first Electroclash single ever released. To celebrate I played google image lottery with the search term, "Macca" and the above was the first picture out of the bag. Probably not a picture of Paul Mccartney but you never know....

Today's show was, in our own special way, dedicated to that great institution of marriage. When two young people declare their undying love for each other and promise to be faithful to each other in front of all the friends and family and then get hideously drunk and dance til morning to silly silly songs.

...yes, after the carefree rockery of last week, and the Swedefest the week before, this week we decided to kick back and chill. Lots of mellow stuff but with a dark edge - Brightblack Morning Light, Kazumasa Hashimoto, Thom York and Plan B. Just to prove its not all about happy clappy bleepy stuff with us. Sometimes music can be earnest, like a concerned mother discussing her son's marks with his geography teacher.

The Post Eurovision Comedown

Before we go any further...this is Andrea:

Andrea presents the show after ours, and she is lovely. This week, she has new hair, which is also lovely. That is all.

So, for the second week running we found ourselves overwhelmed with a veritable welter of music to plough through, curiously much of it from Sweden. No idea why. It just was. Even more strangely, nothing from Finland, despite them being crowned musical Kings of Europe last night - if the Eurovision's anything to go by (which, fortunately, its not).

So the aural mouthwash we provided to wash away the taste of the Song Contest was made up of some mellow acousticky stuff from Espers, psychadelia from The Aliens, sleazy hip hop from Robyn, rock - and indeed, roll - from Howlin' Wolf AND Aretha Franklin....and, and, and, well just look at the playlist, eh?

West Coast Hip Hop Crimes

Picture the scenes, car's burnt out by the side of the road, vicious gangs of youths roaming the streets armed to teeth and ready for ultra-violence. Old people and decent afraid of their own neighbourhoods. Crime levels through the roof. Obviously the perfect breeding ground for Hip Hop. and you'd be right.

Only this is not LA. it's Wishaw. and the biggest crime committed here is the blatant theft of our voices for the shameless self-promotion of kobra audio labs. Wishaw's most twisted and hard hip hop outfit.

On an innocent journey through the interweb, I noticed that Wishaw's wonderboy Mark Kobra who of course is responsible for the jingle on our show has used this little clip from the DIY Chart Show for his own self-publication. So, we're going to get him back by using the same clip for our own shameless self-promotion.

Today's show was a little bit of an odd one even for our own standards, on thursday night we had a crew meeting to check over how the show was shaping up and mepaul and I had to admit that it was tough getting material together for some reason. probably solar flares slowing down the diychartshow's intertubery drive. these happen sometimes.

Last week's live show was sacrificed on the altar of science. Due to long-standing scientific commitments on the part of MePaul (his stunning work on the signs of aging) and MeRobin (his on-going examination of gravity) this show had to be blasted in from the far corners of the globe.

On PlanetBrno where the DIY Chart Show is docked only the chief scientific officer MeLoveYouLongTyme was there to meld the data streams sent by MeRobin and MePaul into one cohesive audio broadcast.

Listeners on the forum seemed to enjoy the scientifically challenged show all the more for the death-defying science of it all.

As everyone knows, all things DIY are good. DIY chartshow, DIY synthpop, Ikea furniture....oh, wait. Sorry. "But what's that you said," I hear you ask, "DIY synthpop???"...

Yip, Casiotone for the Painfully Alone's first 3 albums were recorded using nothing more than cheapy home keyboards and 4-tracks...but now things are changing. Owen Ashworth, the man behind it all, has decided he's taken those limitations to their logical conclusion, and has expanded his sound.

The new album, "Etiquette", sees him working with producers such as Jherek Biscoff (of The Dead Science and Degenerate Art Ensemble) and Jason Quever (The Papercuts and Pan American Recording Studio), and brings in pianos, organs, strings, flutes, drums, and pedal steel guitars. However, at the root of it all, the homemade feel remains. And jolly nice it is, too.

Balkan Beat Box - concert review

The time has come, once again, to squash a few of us in the smallest car available and take that arduous trip down to that quite insignificant city that goes under the name Vienna or Wien „auf Ostereichische“. This time the lure to get out of Brno and head south of the border, was the unique experience of seeing the Izraeli-New York collective Balkan Beat Box play at the Wuk, an old faktory space converted into an impressive art centre slap bang in the middle of Vienna. We’re supposed to get an interview, but as has become tradition with us over the years we turn up fashionably late,and miss out on this Czech exclusive.

Pretty much as we enter the club the whole place starts jumping to the beat of a drum and a parade of musicians in pig masks forces its way to the stage through the audience. Camera flashes go off in an instant and a cameraman from some Austrian TV smacks me in the face as he walks backwards, in the attempt to capture the mayhem created by the masked BBB.

Once on stage and after a few get to know you comments, the band rips into action with samples, percussion, 2x saxes, a Dick Dale guitar sound, what seems to be a hefty bass, oh and of course with some added spice of sweat, energy and an arsenal of cockerel sounds.

Not what was expected at all. The now well-accustomed Viennese audience got it straight away, Vienna has a plethora of club nights dedicated to Balkan and Gypsy music mashed and mixed with bags of electronica (De-La Dap, Wuk being just the tip of the iceberg) but our crew seemed a little perplexed. This aint Boban Markovic? This is Boban fully versed in MPC and big fat bass language.

The musicians led by drummer and computer geek, Tamir Muskat, who conducts the proceedings from his command centre at the front left of the stage, dance and conga themselves into a frenzy of banging beats, blaring horns and the crazy rapping antics of Tomer Yosef. The energy is fantastic and the crowd is loving it.

What I love about this band is not that they are great musicians, they’re not! With the exception of Ori Kaplan on Sax – who is a very special musician – they come across as a bunch of guys having fun. When a band relies heavily on a computer for backing tracks, there is always the problem of how to organise improvisation and keep it all in time. Balkan Beat Box have the best solution to this problem. Keep in time? Us? With our reputation? NO WAY! They just jam and groove and when the computer comes in and they are all out of time – they fumble around for a bar until it all syncs back in. This might sound amateur and silly but it works, it really does. The energy comes not from musical precision but from the party spirit and the love of the groove.

Balkan Beat Box as the name might suggest are more than just a crazed bunch of lunatics, dancing feverishly into the night. They have a message. Normally we’d hide under the table at the thought of a message in music, but this one’s got a new flavour to it. They contest that there is a unique Mediterranean rhythm that can unite the countries around this sea rather than divide them, that the Turks, the Greeks, the Southern Slavs, the Israelis, the Arabs, the Spanish, the Italian, the Muslim, the Christian and the Jewish all share a beat and a rhythm and a common culture, One which could unite them.

Well call me crazy if I think that’s a bit idealistic, but it’s got to start somewhere and it might as well start with a banging bass-line and some funky drums. - mind you, having someone of arabic descent in the band might have helped.

Instant Automatons

Back in about 1987 - 88, I remember my Dad asking me what music I liked and I replied, Indie Music. I was thinking about The Jesus Mary Chain and the electrohippies and jesus jones and similar bands, which Janice Long and John Peel were playing to me. I figured I knew what I was talking about. I remember my Dad's reply, "So, your sending off blank tapes to obscure bands in magazines and getting them to send you their music" - I looked at the old man like he was a proper martian. Little did I realise he knew exactly what he was talking about. In the Late 70's and early 80's people were distributing their own music by themselves via blank C60 and C90 tapes that buzzes around the world via the 80's equivalent of the internet (the postal service). Possibly the founders of this movement - or at least one of the most notable bands were the Instant Automatons. find out loads more about them from their website.

Jennifer Gentle

Jennifer Gentle comes from Padova, a foggy city in Northern Italy, not so far from Venice. She was born in early 2000 and her short life has been both quiet and tumultuous, at the same time. Actually, Jennifer Gentle is not a girl, but a band formed by two guys: Marco Fasolo, 23, who sings and plays guitar, and Alessio Gastaldello, 30, thinking drummer.

Marco and Alessio played all the instruments and sang all the vocals. As usual, they tried new instruments and new solutions: toy glockenspiel, bowed guitars, old Bontempi air organs, plastic flutes, chains and clocks pop up here and there (and a deflating helium balloon makes for a good solo in “I do dream you!”).

When a band quotes Syd Barrett, Joe Meek and 13th Floor Elevators amongst their influences, you have to investigate. Well, HAVEN'T you?!?!

Materidouska

Materidouska are Jiri Suchanek and Tereza Damcova, and kinder, more softly spoken people you couldn't want to meet - and they are off it, in the sweetest way and as MePaul pointed out Tereza does look like an 18 year old Felicity Kendal so that can't be a bad thing. They are experimental electronica at it's most experi-mental. Playing with Fennesz in Bucharest and at the Sperm Festival in Prague in late february they may well be the saviours of Brno avante garde eclectronica... They are more than just the FREE album that you can download from www.Muteme.cz, yes that's right they are signed to a label which is giving the whole album away for free!!! They insist that's because you have to see them live. I'll let you into a little secret though, the album is ace even with out watching tereza dive into a large plastic alien on stage (although I would like to see that). Musically, they remind me of Icelands Mum shoved through a meatgrinder and stretched out thin and then rolled around for a while in the palm of mother's hand.

Formed in 2000 in Bergen in Norway.
Late summer 2000, someone got the idea of arranging an outdoor festival in Bergen, Norway. Not necessarily a very good idea, since Bergen has about 280 rainy days a year. The festival featured a bunch of local artists, and Howie B… And it rained. Sitting under a tree, watching people try to dance in the mud, Fredrik Saroea, Ketil Mosnes and Kevin O’Brien figured out they wanted to start a band. Problem was, only Fredrik could play an instrument properly, so they hired Tom Mćland as well. Not because HE could play an instrument (he couldn’t) but at least he was good at computer animation… Kevin quit a couple of weeks later, but Fredrik, Ketil and Tom knew they had to make this rather quirky project happen, and they played their first gig three months later

Freeform Five has four members: lynchpin producer, multi-instrumentalist and chief songwriter Anu Pillai and vocalists Cabba, Tamara Barnett-Herrin and Nick Decosemo.

The band are confident that what they’ve made stands up as unique document of who they are and where they’ve all come from. As well as co-writing a song for the album with his old friend Gary from Snow Patrol, Nick was even vindicated in his provincial childhood music taste and got to record with his hero Vince Clarke of Depeche Mode and Erasure. Meanwhile Anu himself was able to fulfil a personal dream, flying out to the States to work on the final touches to the album with funk and hip hop mixing legend and Timbaland's go-to-man, Jimmy Douglass.

Frederick Lincoln 'Link' Wray Jr (May 2, 1929 – November 5, 2005) was a rock and roll guitarist most noted for introducing a new sound for electric guitars. Before Rumble, electric guitars were used to produce clean sounds and jazz chords. Wray made a new sound by drilling 4 holes into his amp, thus inventing fuzz-tone, distortion and noise. He also pioneered the power chord - invented the bloody thing, some say....

Right so, she writes an amzing album of truly beautiful music back in 1972, called Just Another Diamond Day. The press misunderstand it and she wanders off in the huff and decides music is pish and she'd rather raise a family. Fair enough - she wouldn't be the first to ditch music. She may well be the first person to wait 33 years between 1st album and 2nd album though. Last month she released Lookaftering which follows on from the first album as if it was written 2 years later. I'm sure she's going to end up enjoying much more aclaim this time round than she did 35 years ago. The only question is ... will we get it, this time? I hope so.

Kraak en Smaak

Oscar de Jong, Mark Kneppers and Wim Plug are Kraak & Smaak, a Dutch trio championing the sound of funked-up breaks whilst winning acclaim from the likes of Annie Nightingale, Ali B, Lottie, Chris Coco and Laurent Garnier.

Studying at the Music Conservatory in Rotterdam, Oscar cites jazz, hip-hop, funk, breakbeat and all experimental music as his main inspirations. The second member of Kraak & Smaak, Wim Plug has traversed the length and breadth of Holland and found himself up on the decks next to Portishead's unofficial crate-digger Andy Smith, Depth Charge's Saul Kane and drum 'n' bass DJ Aphrodite amongst many others.
Over in Holland Mark is a bit of an all-round entertainer, "It's quite odd to think but I'm also in one of the biggest pop bands in Holland," he explains. "It's a 70s retro-act called Wipneus & Pim, we do a lot of festival stuff and we've got our own radio show but I keep it totally separate from what I do with Kraak & Smaak, although we did drop a drum 'n' bass remix of one of our chart hits recently, that was quite funny."
"The album (Boogie Angst) fits everywhere," says Wim. "We like to think of it as dance music to listen to."

The Brazilian Girls

The Brazilian Girls name is slightly confusing when imagining what the band actualy look like and when searching the web. Both times you come up with the same result, great-looking girls clad in swim wear. However, the music may match that creatively thought up premise and vision, but in reality they are 3 blokes and a multinational lady with tastes for reggae, electronica, jazz, bossanova you name it. The stand out tracks from their last release are "Pussy" and "Dont Stop". Sabina the vocalist who often enjoys wearing lacy eye masks on-stage and sings in no less than five different languages and met the boys in NY and from then on they've shot up that music industry trendy ladder and attracted lots of attention from remixers such as Riton among others. Yes, another trendy band for your designer tosser, but they do deserve more respect, hopefully they are here to stay.

THE IDLE RACE

The Idle Race was one of the top 1960s acts never to have a hit although Jeff Lynne later made up for this with a stint in The Move before forming The Electric Light Orchestra with Roy Wood and Bev Bevan in the 1970s.

The original guitarist was Johnny Mann who had been in Carl Wayne and the Vikings. The Idle Race came out of Mike Sheridan & the Nightriders, a Birmingham group that included future Move, ELO and Wizzard frontman Roy Wood. Pritchard, Masters and Spencer were joined by Jeff Lynne. Lynne wrote most of the band’s material and produced the second album. The Idle Race released two poorly-selling LPs, The Birthday Party and The Idle Race. There was also a series of seemingly commercial singles but these all failed to chart.

The Microphones

Fronted and basically run by Phil Evrun of D+ and Old Time Relijun. The microphones have released a series of four concept albums based on the four greeek elephants, i mean elements. Sounds like it should be a load of tosh but is in fact, beautiful, gripping and incredibly addictive. I haven't had it off my iPod since i discovered this band. Control Z

Control Z are a Nu-Skool Breakz Production duo fresh outa London. Tom Petais and Nicky D'Silva aka Dash and Inch met through the Community Music Project. The first single was snapped up DJ mutiny's Funkatech Records and very quickly "Disko and Pain" went to number one in the mixmag charts. They have released 11 12"s this week and we are expected great things from them. Especially at this years Breakspoll, - come on!!!!

THE SOFT MACHINE

The Soft Machine were a pioneering British psychedelic, progressive rock and jazz band from Canterbury, Kent, England, named after the book The Soft Machine by William S. Burroughs. They were one of the central bands in the Canterbury scene.

When the band became Soft Machine, its initial lineup featured Kevin Ayers (bass), Robert Wyatt (drums, vocals), Daevid Allen (guitar) and Mike Ratledge (keyboards). Allen left before their first album, and Ayers was replaced by Hugh Hopper by the time of the second. Allen later formed Gong.
The best-known lineup, containing Wyatt, Ratledge, Hopper, and saxophonist Elton Dean, produced the critically-acclaimed album Third (note: recorded at the same time as Miles Davis's 'Bitches Brew') and its follow-up Fourth. At that time Soft Machine was playing a form of jazz rock/fusion jazz influenced by John Coltrane and other American post-bop jazzmen and has some similarities to the early work of Weather Report. However, Machine's jazz comes directly from the avant jazz and free jazz movements that had developed amongst young British jazz musicians in the mid to late 60's. This is reflected in the similarities to the music of (Ian Carr's) Nucleus, as well as personnel overlaps. Wyatt, disagreeing with a direction that left no room for his vocal experiments, left the band in 1971 to form Matching Mole (a French pun on the name Soft Machine), the creation of proably the first RIO album 'End OF An Ear', then with the unfortunate accident that broke his back, a notable solo career. Later line-up changes left Ratledge the only original member of the band, and by 1976 he was gone too (composer of some very successful music for ad jingles, including those for BA). Karl Jenkins (keyboards and woodwinds), who had joined in 1972, became the band's leader and led it until its disbanding in 1984; guitarist Allan Holdsworth was a member during this period. (Today, Karl Jenkins is better known for cross-over classical projects such as Adiemus.) Ric Sanders (later a member of Fairport Convention) was on "Alive and Well" (1978).
