The Hitchhiker who brightened up our day!

BURNINGBOY

Today we picked up Brno's own Burningboy, who joined us for a short trip around the internet. In return for a lift, Burningboy provided with us with 2 tracks off his new album, Suffer4beauty. Two fine electro pop tracks, proving that the music scene in Brno is in a fine state.

Burningboy promises to come back, when he's ready to perform live. and we can't wait. download the album for free from www.burningboy.cz. Shall I say that again, download the album FOR FREE from www.burningboy.cz

Jennifer Gentle

Jennifer Gentle comes from Padova, a foggy city in Northern Italy, not so far from Venice. She was born in early 2000 and her short life has been both quiet and tumultuous, at the same time. Actually, Jennifer Gentle is not a girl, but a band formed by two guys: Marco Fasolo, 23, who sings and plays guitar, and Alessio Gastaldello, 30, thinking drummer.

Marco and Alessio played all the instruments and sang all the vocals. As usual, they tried new instruments and new solutions: toy glockenspiel, bowed guitars, old Bontempi air organs, plastic flutes, chains and clocks pop up here and there (and a deflating helium balloon makes for a good solo in “I do dream you!”).

When a band quotes Syd Barrett, Joe Meek and 13th Floor Elevators amongst their influences, you have to investigate. Well, HAVEN'T you?!?!

The Angels delighted in the wonder of

Materidouska

Materidouska are Jiri Suchanek and Tereza Damcova, and kinder, more softly spoken people you couldn't want to meet - and they are off it, in the sweetest way and as MePaul pointed out Tereza does look like an 18 year old Felicity Kendal so that can't be a bad thing. They are experimental electronica at it's most experi-mental. Playing with Fennesz in Bucharest and at the Sperm Festival in Prague in late february they may well be the saviours of Brno avante garde eclectronica... They are more than just the FREE album that you can download from www.Muteme.cz, yes that's right they are signed to a label which is giving the whole album away for free!!! They insist that's because you have to see them live. I'll let you into a little secret though, the album is ace even with out watching tereza dive into a large plastic alien on stage (although I would like to see that). Musically, they remind me of Icelands Mum shoved through a meatgrinder and stretched out thin and then rolled around for a while in the palm of mother's hand.

16.1.06

The Grapefruit of this Musical breakie was provided by:

Morningwood
Morningwood are a sassy 5 piece from New York, rightly likened to Goldfrapp, the New York Dolls, Blondie and the Ramones. Up-tempo, fun, loud, and sex-obsessed - surely Morningwood are destined for big things. well we'll see. Morningwood have a great website full of wonderous news and bloggie bits - it's probably easier to check it out for yourself, than have us copy and paste it over her for you. Will they be the next big thing, well possibly not, but they are going to have fun trying. We like 'em and Morals of Convenience is a great title for any song.

8.1.06

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah – The Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth (self released) Some people like, some people don’t like

Chromeo Needy Girl (Vice 2005)
discovered and promoted by Tiga, Chromeo are fighting the war against progress with this more 80's than the 80's track

Jamie Lidell – A Little Bit More (Warp 2005)
A review of the gig at the 100 club explains all – „Imagine Prince producing Otis Redding at an early '90s warehouse rave“.

Edan Making Planets ft. Mr. Lif (Lewis RecordingAs 2005)

Gruff Rhys Ni Yw Y Bwd (Placid Casual 2005)
wales finest son in another cracking tune shocker.

Psapp – King Kong (Arable 2005)
Better than the film. No intervals, no special effects, just good musician ship and songwriting skills.

Bachelor Machines Hold For Disconnect (Stackable Records 2005)
A very difficult year for Clint Hoagland from Lansing Michigan - serious illness in the family and legal rubblings over the artists name didn't stop clint from self=releasing some incredible tunes.

Death From Above 1979 – Black History Month (679s 2005)
It doesn't matter how Sebastien Grainger and Jesse F. Keeler met and formed the Toronto rock duo Death From Above 1979 (either on a pirate ship or in prison, take your pick). All that really matters is that they found a way to blend power rock and dance floor sensibilities, finally giving today's sound the swagger it's been missing. Their album,You're a Woman, I'm a Machine has enough blaring riffs, off-beat lyrics, intense rhythms, and strong hooks to satisfy anyone. There's no better way to experience these guys than when they're on stage.

Datarock – Ugly Primadonna (YAP 2005)
Formed in 2000 in Bergen in Norway.
Late summer 2000, someone got the idea of arranging an outdoor festival in Bergen, Norway. Not necessarily a very good idea, since Bergen has about 280 rainy days a year. The festival featured a bunch of local artists, and Howie B… And it rained. Sitting under a tree, watching people try to dance in the mud, Fredrik Saroea, Ketil Mosnes and Kevin O’Brien figured out they wanted to start a band. Problem was, only Fredrik could play an instrument properly, so they hired Tom Mćland as well. Not because HE could play an instrument (he couldn’t) but at least he was good at computer animation… Kevin quit a couple of weeks later, but Fredrik, Ketil and Tom knew they had to make this rather quirky project happen, and they played their first gig three months later

Field Music - If Only The Moon Were Up (Memphis Industries 2005)
Songs that go places and don’t look back

The Decemberists – 16 military wives (Domino 2005)

Art Brut Emily Kane (Fierce Panda 2005)
Wrongly over-shadowed by vastly inferior bands - a shiny torch in the british indie scene

Broadcast Corporeal (Warp 2005)
Beautiful!

Happy Mondays – Step On (Factory not 2005)
Can’t really say anything that hasn’t been already said about this track, if you don’t know it you don’t like music.

The Juan Maclean – Shining Skinned Friend (DFA 2005)
"IT'S been a bit of a sore spot., laughs Juan Maclean, "sitting on this album and seeing this robot stuff pop up all over the place. I have serious robot credentials that go back years and years. Like, a decade! But Daft Punk beat me to the punch." He may be joking, but the man's right. If anyone's earned the right to call their debut album 'Less Than Human' and imagine a love triangle consisting of a man, a woman and the man's gay robot friend. Big Friends with Murphy and Goldsworthy, Mr. Maclean has helped to reignite the dancefloor. Oh, and he used to be in a band called Six Finger Satellite and taught English in a young offenders institute.

Vitalic – My Friend Dario (Pias 2005)
Another great release from PIAS. This label seems to know who to pick. This time its Vitalic who is AKA I-F.

The Perceptionists Black Dialogue (Definitive Jux 2005)
my highlight from this year's hiphop crop - a cracking track with lyrics chuck D would be proud of.

M.I.A vs Kopa - Kopa Hombre (XL Recordings 2005)

13 and God - Men of Station (Anticon 2005)
notwist and themselves 2005 collaboration more popular than either band's solo output.

Lord Order Buzz Track Two (music.download.com 2005)
a math rock classic - oddly selfclassified as trance and even psytrance.

The Slits – I Heard It Through The Grapevine (Sony )
Originally only released in Japan through Sony, later due to rave reviews got its release worldwide. Today one of the more popular rare tracks doing the rounds on peer to peers.

LCD Soundsystem – Give it up (DFA 2005)
James Murphy, thank you for making the scrap on the dancefloor into a fun place to be.
